Brazilian performance artist Nando Messias‘ work straddles performance art, dance and theatre. They create performances that combine beautiful images with a fierce critique of gender, visibility and violence. Nando has performed at prestigious venues such as Hayward Gallery, V&A, Tate Gallery, Roundhouse, RVT and ICA, among other spaces across the UK and extensively on the international circuit.

The (Almost) Pink Supper is part of HomeLive Art's Knotty festival of performance, taking place across Hastings from 6-9 June 2019. Taking the form of a dinner party, this performance seeks to encourage us to think about the countries around the world where LGBTQI+ rights are under threat.

Join Nando for an intimate gathering at Jerwood Gallery as we attempt to promote an understanding of these rights through the shared experience of sitting around a table, breaking bread and witnessing performance.

“Despite its cheerful international image, my native country, Brazil, remains the number one country for trans murders—a most shameful indictment indeed. When I lived there, I myself experienced abuse daily and know well what effects it can have on one’s life. It almost cost me mine. That may seem incredible, but it’s true. In order to survive, I had to leave the country. But what of those who cannot afford to? Or those more courageous or resilient than myself, who resist the system while refusing to leave? The Pink Supper is dedicated to them.” Nando Messias

Wear pink … actually wear anything you like—it’s all about being open and being yourself.

The (Almost) Pink Supper is an early iteration of The Pink Supper, which will premiere in the UK in Spring 2020 (dates tbc). The Pink Supper has been commissioned by LADA and the Library of Performing Rights.
