Jerwood Gallery are extremely excited to announce our first Drink & Draw of 2019, led by critically acclaimed, exhibiting artist Nigel Cooke, one of Britain's leading contemporary painters.

The session is titled Departure, continuing the waterside theme of Nigel's Painter's Beach Club exhibition. Participants will use Nigel's ideas, images and inspiration as a point of departure to begin a visual and psychological journey.

Nigel will structure the session along the lines of his own studio practice, encouraging freedom of expression. Most of us are inevitably tied down by preconceptions and bad habits in our creative processes, and Nigel is keen to push participants to reach a place they may have never thought they could, leaving those preconceptions behind. He will discuss mark making, his own painting, and developing away from known sources to move towards an abstraction based on the vocabulary and range of marks.

"My aim is to create a distance from the work so that something new can be learnt, boundaries can maybe be broken or bent, and discussion can happen about outcomes by taking the emphasis away from results from the start. I do this myself in the studio."

Participants will be given an envelope of unrelated images as a starting point.  They will use collage and drawing, respond to random elements, erase sections and begin again or add fresh patches or parts of other images on top of the drawings, the intention being a constant refiguring of the images and an unsettled, disturbed relationship to making, taking participants away from what they know and makes them comfortable in order to push their creativity to new levels.

Ticket price includes materials and complimentary drinks. If you would like to use a specific medium, paper or material, please bring with you on the day.
