Concluding a fabulous season of Drink & Draw events, Jerwood Gallery is delighted to welcome artist Wycliffe Stutchbury, leading an exercise in control, concentration and mental agility.

The idea is to draw a line freehand, as straight as we can, then draw another line following the first as closely as possible. Then repeat. Ad infinitum. It is important we are true to the preceding line, following any faults or undulations.  It is a meditative process that can mirror the mind. The results are surprising, and testament to our fallability. Our minds wander from the path we set, we get distracted by what’s in front of us, and what isn’t. Following the previous line requires us to accept its imperfections and acknowledge our faults. Then there is control and how much we are prepared to relinquish it in the final outcome. The results are surprising and often the imperfections make the drawing easier to relate to.

Wycliffe trained at the London College of Furniture, and worked as a cabinet maker for many years before becoming a model maker and metalworker. He returned to wood with the aim of exposing its natural beauty and fragility without the distraction of form or function. Wycliffe has exhibited in Europe, USA and China and teaches at UCL, Bartlett School Of Architecture and West Dean College.

Drink & Draw is a monthly two hour workshop led by a different artist each month. The aim is to create a relaxed atmosphere in which to be creative and have fun, encouraging people who wouldn’t usually “draw” to participate. Experienced artists also welcome.

Drink & Draw at Jerwood Gallery is curated by artist and fine art jeweller Jane Runchman.
