Quentin Blake:
Dedicated Readers

Sir Quentin Blake (b. 1932) has created an ongoing series of exhibitions for Jerwood Gallery featuring weird and wonderful creations and characters, all brought to life in his distinctive style.  This latest series of work celebrates Blake’s love of reading and the important role that literature has played in his life and artistic career. Blake says:  'A lot of my work has been in books, and in fact reading books is the only thing in which I have a qualification!  It is interesting to me to see the many different ways in which people do it.’

Blake studied English Literature at the University of Cambridge, life drawing at Chelsea School of Art, and education at the London Institute of Education. He taught illustration for over twenty years at the Royal College of Art and has collaborated with many writers including Michael Rosen and Roald Dahl. Blake has written and illustrated many of his own books. He has received a knighthood and a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. Blake lives and works in London and Hastings, and became Jerwood Gallery’s Artist Patron in 2018.
