The Painter Behind the Canvas

On display in Rooms 4 & 5, The Painter behind the Canvas focuses on a selection of self-portraits collected by the writer Ruth Borchard (1910-2000). These works are exhibited alongside other paintings the artists created that are held in the Jerwood Collection.

There are a hundred British self-portraits in the Borchard Collection, the majority of which are from the 1950s and 60s. Capturing artistic influences from Camden Town, Expressionism, The Euston Road School and Kitchen Sink, this exhibition includes work by Maggi Hambling, Michael Ayrton, Euan Uglow, Alberto Morrocco, Keith Vaughan and Anne Redpath and others.
