The Jerwood Gallery is seeking volunteers to join our vibrant team as Gallery Stewards, supporting us in our work in being a cultural hub in Hastings, and playing a key role in the network of coastal galleries across the South East.

Volunteers play a vital part in the gallery’s operations, ensuring that we deliver the highest standard of visitor engagement and experience, whilst involving the local community in our work. Volunteers at the Jerwood Gallery contribute to the quality experience that is vital to ensuring customers are able to enjoy and engage with the collection and exhibitions, as well as feeling at home within the gallery space.

If you would like to meet like-minded people, be active within your local community, learn new skills, and expand your knowledge of 20th and 21st century art, we would love to welcome you to our team.

Every volunteer receives a full induction and training. Volunteers can also enjoy free entry to the gallery, discount in both the gallery shop and café, free entry tickets for guests, and social events.

'I have volunteered at the Jerwood for several years now. My initial motive was simply curiosity - I wanted to know more about 20th century British art but, also, what is it like running an art gallery? What goes on behind the scenes? All the staff are lovely, knowledgeable and unpretentious and the volunteers are all fascinating and friendly, with widely differing backgrounds and a shared interest in art. It is a pleasure to wander the galleries and develop an interest in a painter you knew nothing about before. The gallery spaces are beautiful and the windows provide an amazing vantage point over the fishermen’s beach and the valley and hills of the Old Town. It's interesting interacting with visitors, many of whom are also knowledgeable about the works on display, and have fascinating stories to tell about the artists and their own experiences. The gallery runs some great educational and creative workshops and it’s a treat to feel a part of this organisation.' - Philip, Volunteer Gallery Steward
