What’s happening on siteWork started on site on the 28th June, and is proceeding on schedule. The first element to be completed was the drilling of the probes for the ground source heat pump heating and cooling systems. There are 11 of these probes, which go down 120 metres into the bedrock, and a closed loop of brine circulates in them to use the thermal conductivity of the ground in order to cool the building in summer, and heat it in winter. This system will meet nearly 70% of our heating requirements and all the cooling for the building. This is all part of our strategy to make the Jerwood Gallery as energy-efficient as possible, using renewable resources and passive environmental design. Altogether, annual emissions are projected to be around 27 tonnes CO2 per annum – around 70% less than an average museum of similar size. Coniston have met with local residents and traders, and the team are committed to minimising disruption during the busy summer season. The community building on the other side of the site is now out of the ground and the walls continue to rise. The foundations for the new cafe have also been laid. It’s also been a busy few months for the wider Jerwood family with the appointment of Elizabeth Gilmore as Director Designate for Jerwood Gallery. Liz will be joining us at the beginning of October. We were also delighted to support the Sussex Coast College Prize which was awarded to local artist, Danny Pockets. Danny’s work will be on show in the Circle Gallery at the College during November. Students from four local schools (The Grove, Helenswood, Hillcrest and William Parker) have sent in artwork for the Gallery hoardings. We will have the story on our website first so keep checking it to keep up to date. |
