The Jerwood Gallery is part of a wider masterplan for the Stade to transform an area currently used as a coach and lorry park, joining the Old Town to the fishing beach. The coach park is to be replaced with a major new public space and community facilities alongside the gallery. The new public space will create a year-round venue for festivals, events and informal use, the first time Hastings will have a space purpose-designed for the events, such as Jack-in-the-Green, and the Seafood and Wine Festival, for which the town is famous.
New community facilities will meet the needs of the Old Town for gathering spaces to hold classes, educational events and community meetings, as well as a training kitchen for a Seafood Training School to be run in conjunction with Billingsgate Market. This will also involve the refurbishment of the East Hastings Sea Angling Association building to include more community space. There will also be a new cafe spilling out onto the public space.
Alongside this development, the road infrastructure around the Stade will be overhauled, making the area safer for pedestrians and reducing anti-social driving. 7 coach drop-off bays will be created to ensure that there is no loss of coach visitors to the Old Town, with new coach parking provided elsewhere in Hastings, and this has been developed in consultation with coach operating companies.
The project is being funded by a variety of partners, further information on how it is being delivered can be found here .
