Collected by Alan Grieve (Chairman, Jerwood Foundation) the Jerwood Collection comprises of just under 300 works of Modern and Contemporary British art and continues to grow with new acquisitions and donations under the direction of its curator, Lara Wardle.

The purpose of the Jerwood Collection of Modern and Contemporary British art is to give public access to a privately-owned collection and enhance the understanding and enjoyment of 20th and 21st century British art.

At the heart of the collection are paintings, works on paper, prints and sculpture by British artists working principally between the First World War and the 1960s, most notably: Barbara Hepworth, Paul Nash, Ben Nicholson, John Piper, L. S. Lowry RA, Walter Sickert ARA and Christopher Wood.

The contemporary strand of the Jerwood Collection was developed primarily through the acquisition of works by artists who were winners or shortlisted for the Jerwood Painting Prize (1994-2003) such as Craigie Aitchison RA, Basil Beattie RA and Prunella Clough. It now includes works by contemporary artists whose work has been exhibited at Jerwood Gallery: Jeffery Camp RA, Rachel Howard and Rose Wylie RA.
