BOOK OF THE MONTH

Assistant Curator, Victoria Howarth, delves inside our September book of the month in this week's blog.

Rachel Howard
RRP: £35.00 (10% off for Jerwood Gallery Members)

This beautiful catalogue was published by Blain|Southern in 2011 to give a chronological overview of Rachel Howard’s painting and drawing practice to date. It provides a great introduction to her work, with essays by Louisa Elderton, Curator and Artist Liaison at Blain|Southern; Martin Gayford, critic and best-selling author; and Mario Codognato, Chief Curator at Museo MADRE, Naples. There is also a short story by Cressida Connelly, inspired by Howard’s painting Folie à deux

There are over 130 stunning colour reproductions of Howard’s work (almost all printed at full page scale) that give an idea of the power and breadth of this fascinating artist’s body of work.

In her introductory essay, Louisa Elderton discusses Howard’s unique painting style, in which the artist fuses abstraction and figuration, and uses an unusual mix of materials.  Howard’s work takes inspiration from human emotion, as Elderton writes: ‘Each body of work is directly concerned with exploring the intricacies of what it means to be human, considering our capacity to feel, think, question, hurt, breakdown, worship, sin, rebel or conform.’

Our exhibition Rachel Howard: At Sea will be on display at Jerwood Gallery until Sunday 4 October 2015.  There are 17 works on display in this exhibition, and Howard has also curated a room of Jerwood Collection paintings, which are on display in gallery room 1.

Jerwood Gallery shop is open whenever the gallery is open and don’t forget, you can visit the shop anytime for free, without visiting the gallery.
