Jerwood Gallery Chairman, David Pennock,  longstanding resident and former High Sheriff of East Sussex, tells us about what he’s looking forward to during 2015 at the gallery.

2015 is an exciting year for Jerwood Gallery.  We have just celebrated our 3rd birthday with cake, balloons, free admission and live music from local musicians on Tuesday 17th March.  Our exhibition programme is the most ambitious and varied since the gallery launched just over three years ago, with something new to see almost every month of the year.

Displays and exhibitions are taking place across the building on every scale by a range of different artists, from single highlight pieces and displays of work by local school children, to work by internationally renowned artists, and large scale exhibitions spanning the ground floor.

The reputation of the gallery continues to grow, both locally, nationally and indeed internationally and our exhibitions continue to attract an ever growing number of visitors to Hastings.

Our membership scheme continues to thrive and develop, our schools and groups programmes are expanding, and there are a variety of events, talks, workshops and classes held at the gallery every month.  There is something for everyone at Jerwood Gallery this year.

Our current exhibition Chantal Joffe: Beside the Seaside, and two room display In Focus: Edward Burra – A Rye View have been extremely popular with our visitors, and have enhanced and enriched the current display of the Jerwood Collection.

Our next Foreshore Gallery show will feature highlights from the Fleming Collection of Scottish art, which will be hung alongside works from the Jerwood Collection.

I really enjoy working with such a vibrant, dedicated team at the gallery including the team of fifty enthusiastic volunteers. They along with our supporters, members, and benefactors are the lifeblood of the gallery. I thank them all for their continued support at this exciting time in Jerwood Gallery’s development.  I hope that you will enjoy everything that Jerwood Gallery has to offer this year, from L.S. Lowry, to Hastings’ very own, Quentin Blake; there are so many reasons to visit. Come and see us soon.
