The Jerwood Foundation is one of the UK’s leading private arts foundations and has invested nearly £80m into the arts since 1991. The Foundation is dedicated to imaginative and responsible funding and sponsorship of the arts, education and other areas of human endeavor and excellence, particularly supporting artists at early stages in their careers. The Foundation was created and endowed in 1977 by John Jerwood, a successful and international pearl dealer, who died in 1991.
The Jerwood Foundation has been a major capital funder of many leading arts organisations, including the Royal Court and Young Vic theatres; Trinity College of Music and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts; Glyndebourne and the London Symphony Orchestra. It wholly funds three major initiatives – the Jerwood Space in London, which houses the capital’s largest dedicated performing arts rehearsal facilities as well as an art gallery and cafe, the Jerwood Art Collection which will be housed at the new gallery in Hastings, and the Jerwood Sculpture Collection at Ragley Hall in Warwickshire. The latter is a growing collection of sculptures, including many special commissions by the Foundation, and comprises works by established artists such as Elisabeth Frink, Lynn Chadwick and Antony Gormley as well as new pieces by Julian Wild, Fernando Casasempere and Benedict Carpenter.
In 1999 it endowed a registered UK charity, the Jerwood Charitable Foundation, to manage and develop the revenue grants side of Jerwood’s work. The Jerwood Charitable Foundation works with a range of partners and across art forms. Current projects include Jerwood New Playwrights at the Royal Court, the Jerwood/Artangel Open and the Jerwood Opera Writing Programme at Aldeburgh Music.
A major initiative of the Jerwood Charitable Foundation is Jerwood Visual Arts; a year round gallery programme housed at the Jerwood Space, which then tours nationally. The Jerwood Visual Arts programme consists of awards, exhibitions and events to celebrate and support talented artists in the early stages of their careers, across the range of visual arts disciplines.
The Jerwood Foundation, Jerwood Charitable Foundation and Jerwood Space have independent board structures, but with some of the same personnel involved on the board of each to ensure continuity and consistency of the values, mission and ethos of the Foundation.
